Second Nature
This small but potent national charity, based here in Boston, was founded in 1993 by Sen. John Kerry, Dr. Anthony Cortese and leading educators, to address an urgent global challenge: current strategies for meeting human needs are unsustainable. Natural limits are being exceeded, leading to the collapse of systems worldwide, including New England coastal fisheries. Bringing human and natural systems into balance will require major shifts in how humans operate with each other and the environment. It will require that humans learn how to design communities that improve human health and productivity, promote positive social interaction, and help to maintain the integrity of ecosystems. Second Nature reaches the minds of society’s future professionals and leaders through the colleges and universities they are attending today. It works with administrators, faculty, staff and students at these institutions to make the principles of environmental sustainability the foundation of teaching and operations. Since its founding, Second Nature has educated over 4,000 faculty and administrators from more than 500 colleges and universities. It has created an information clearinghouse that, for example, provides profiles of innovative sustainability programs and resources for academics from around the world. This organization needs your support to continue its critical work with institutions.
