DESCRIPTION:The Boston Gay Men's Chorus (BGMC) of currently 175 voices was formed 20 years ago as a groundbreaking community outreach organization, promoting social tolerance. It has gained regional respect for its musicianship, creative programming, and educational effectiveness.
It now prepares three different programs each season. Each program draws on classical repertoire, commissioned works and popular music--a broad selection designed to attract a broad audience. It annually performs six subscription concerts to near-capacity audiences in Jordan Hall, its performance home, as well as a dozen additional outreach shows. More than 15,000 people enjoyed the music of the BGMC this past season.
To broaden its outreach further, BGMC produces one commercially distributed compact disc each year, which is building a national audience. It also collaborates with other artistic organizations such as the Boston Pops, and attracts corporate sponsorships, to gain an even broader following. Here is an organization that is carrying out its educational mission with care and great success. (2001: CULTURE: Arts: Performing: Music and Dance)
