Manomet Center for Conservation Sciences CONTACT:P.O. Box 1770, 81 Stage Point Road Manomet, MA 02345 508-224-6521 www.manomet.org, President
DESCRIPTION:Manomet is one of Massachusetts' and the nation's leading conservation
science research centers. It began in 1966 with a donation of 20
shorefront acres along a major migratory flyway for birds, and in 1969
it was incorporated as the "Manomet Observatory." Over the years it
has developed into a world leader of policy-oriented environmental
research and education.
The Center has six specialties: the Western Hemisphere Shorebird
Reserve Network, bird conservation, marine fisheries conservation,
regional conservation planning, forest conservation management, and
wildlife and agriculture. Manomet scientists collaborate with many
diverse groups to create science-based solutions to environmental
problems. Current research highlights: the ill-health effects of
agricultural chemicals on wildlife such as turtles and birds; the
importance of staging points for migratory birds (based on over 30
years of data); the formulation of national shorebird conservation
plans; the creation of user-friendly software for conservation groups
and town planners, focusing on special habitats in southeastern
Massachusetts; designing fishing gear that reduces bycatch and
protects marine habitats, and developing new methods for protectively
managing the northern forests of New England. Here is your chance to
support first-class conservation science, public policy, and
environmental problem-solving. (2002: NATURE: Biodiversity)
