John Oliveira, President

Association of Blind Citizens, Inc.

When the blind lead the blind in this organization, all are empowered. In 2000, a group of blind people, diverse in all other respects, founded ABC to enhance quality of life for vision-impaired people by opening to them experiences and activities they would not otherwise have. For example, technology: ABC was the nation’s first organization to offer blind people grants to purchase adaptive technological equipment at half-price—for use in workplaces, schools, internships, homes, sports and in volunteering. In education, ABC’s scholarships program has provided tens of thousands of dollars to undergraduate and graduate students. Literacy? ABC’s Braille literacy program and sponsorship of Braille editions has made Harry Potter and many other books accessible to children and adults. Athletics? ABC created and operates a “beep baseball” team, one of only 14 in the country, and sponsors blind children in camps. English as a second language? ABC’s “English in 24 hours” audio-cassette program enables blind people to learn English by sound. We could go on. This bootstrap organization has accomplished a great deal for its own constituency, with funding entirely through charitable donations. That means we — you — can help these folks help themselves.
