Boston Museum Project
SPECIAL PROJECT 2005Perhaps because Boston is so pre-eminently rich in historic sites, it has never developed a comprehensive history museum — until now, when the value of fitting all the pieces together in an intelligible, analytical narrative has captured the imagination of a group of philanthropic entrepreneurs. The Boston Museum — slated for opening in 2011 — will put the pieces in context, and tell stories that lack specific sites but nonetheless powerfully influenced where Boston is today and where it is headed — e.g., the successive waves of immigration, the rise and decline of entire industries and technologies, the reshaping of the land and its thoroughfares, and changes in the political landscape. The project is necessarily collaborative, uniting historic institutions, scholars, public officials and government agencies from local to national, corporations and foundations and their leaders, a broad range of donors, and residents. A survey of public opinion showed a 92% approval rating for the concept. A site has been designated — Parcel 12 in the Rose Kennedy Greenway — and a capital campaign is now in its early stages. This is a stellar project, not just for Boston but for our region, state and nation; the Catalogue is proud to invite your generous and thoughtful support.
