Massachusetts Health Council
Here is an excellent example of philanthropy modestly at work behind the scenes for major public benefit: in this case, to improve everyone’s health. The concept for the Massachusetts Health Council arose from collaborative efforts of medical professionals during World War I. The MHC was established in 1920 to convene healthcare leaders from every corner of the state and from opposing policy sides to address ways of improving public health. MHC was an early and effective advocate for pasteurized milk and fluoridated water. Today it investigates the effects of obesity, air pollution and alcohol consumption, and through its extensive network of more than 150 agencies and consumer groups statewide, it educates the general public about health issues. MHC recently published the third edition of its “Common Health for the Commonwealth,” which provides expert perspectives on key public health issues such as access to care, and which is used nationwide as an educational resource in medical schools and to stimulate public policy discussions here at home. Donors’ contributions help MHC to advocate for better health care for the poor, children, elderly, mentally disadvantaged and disabled members of our community. Your gift will not be spent on fanfare — please be generous.
