Preservation Worcester was founded in 1969 by citizens concerned about the loss of distinguished architectural history, from the then-standard practice of “destroy the old, and build anew.” Their idea was that historical structures could be restoratively adapted to new uses, both preserving the past and building the future. PW has saved such landmarks as Mechanics Hall, Union Station, The Chestnut Street Church, and the Quinsigamond School. By finding a buyer for Grand Army of the Republic Hall, PW not only saved a building, but secured an upscale restaurant tenant that will help the city’s economy. Over the years, these 400 dedicated volunteers, together with three staff, have restored numerous landmarks and educated thousands on the importance of historic preservation through guided tours, and school and civic programs. PW has been cited for excellence by the local chapter of the American Institute of Architects and the Massachusetts Historical Commission. Revenues come from annual fundraisers, house tours and the rental of its headquarters, an American Foursquare building with Colonial Revival details. But its endangered-structure list still has 11 buildings that require immediate protection and significant restoration — which will require funding.
