greenGoat
In 2001, greenGoat was founded in response to a
Department of Environmental Protection ban against
certain construction and demolition debris in landfills—
the thought was that as waste gets expensive,
recycling building materials becomes increasingly smart
management. greenGoat works with architects, builders,
and home and building owners, on large-scale developments
and residential projects in eastern Massachusetts.
In one case “our challenge was to play ‘beat the clock’
with the demolition crew, uninstalling and recovering as
much material as possible in two weeks. We lit the Bat
Signal, and removed four tons of material, down to the
baseboards,” even transplanting flowers from the gardens.
The Home-to-Home program has recycled over 42 tons
of material; their commercial program recovers hundreds
of tons in almost every project. They work with Boston’s
Neighborhood Development Services to place building
materials and appliances with needy families. Their
overhead is minimal—“we are still largely in ‘guerrilla’
mode—with an office in cyberspace, we let our website
do the talking,” and they rent trucks as needed. You can
help them to increase their outreach, and save more than
money.
