The Literacy Project

Rural philanthropy is everywhere undernourished because government and philanthropic human services are concentrated in urban centers, for sound reasons. Their rural counterparts serve lower numbers of people, more widely dispersed people, often through volunteers rather than professionals (to reduce costs), and in economies with narrower opportunities. Needs are not less severe; to the contrary, some of our lowest per capita incomes and highest rates of unemployment, high school dropout and teen pregnancy rates, are in rural counties. In response to these problems, TLP was founded in 1984 to provide professional, free, education services for adults and out-of-school youth in poor rural western Massachusetts communities. Beginning with two classrooms in Orange and Greenfield, TLP has grown to five learning centers serving students in 60 communities, with free classes in basic reading, writing, math, GED preparation, computer and job-skills training. Transitions Counselors help individual adult learners develop and implement plans for achieving personal goals in their education, jobs, and lives. Rural philanthropy needs your help, and here is an excellent place to start.
