Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts was created in the mid-‘80s by the Boston Bar Foundation, the City of Boston, and the Artists’ Foundation, to provide pro bono legal services and educational programs to artists and arts organizations. In 2000 the Census reported 15,000 artists in Greater Boston alone; VLA has trained 400 lawyers and assisted over 5,000 artists.
